Kick For Human Rights

Amnesty International is a non-governmental organization focused on human rights with over 7 million members and supporters around the world.

Unfortunately human rights are still being violated by host-countries in the lead up, during, and after international mega sporting events. Typically, the rights to freedom of expression, assembly, and organization are suppressed; people are forcibly evicted from their houses without due compensation; or construction workers building stadiums are exploited. There is an urge to whitewash the country’s reputation, stifle critical voices and hide all wrongs. Amnesty International in the past has campaigned on several countries notoriously disrespectful of human rights when hosting the Olympic Game. The next Olympic games will be held in Rio (2016).

Olympic games can and do lead to human rights abuses. The IOC has the obligation to make sure that no human rights are violated before, during or just after the Olympic Games and hold host countries accountable.
